According to the World Bank

• SMEs account for more than 95% of registered firms and contribute more than 50% of jobs worldwide

• SMEs (formal and informal) contribute more than 40% of national income (GDP) in emerging economies (IFAC reported that SMEs contribute more than 55% of GDP and 60 - 70% of employment in developed economies).

• 600 million jobs will be needed by 2030 to absorb the growing global workforce, which makes SME development a high priority around the world to many government

Despite this

• SMEs are less likely to be able to obtain bank loans than large firms

• SMEs (and Small Businesses) are least obligated to report on sustainability initiatives
